A redware flower frog, with an inscribed name, in a form I've never seen, with what appears to be an ocher stain with age-related encrustations. (It's seen time outside, but the glaze lacks the sheen of a lead or Albany glaze.) My best and only guess is that this was a graveyard memorial piece, given the inscription (Erona Wollas?), shape, obvious age, and the fact that it could only have been made by a highly skilled potter. The green stains appear to be either algael residue or mineral encrustations resulting from longtime exposure to dirt and water. The conical top, around which the name is inscribed, is unique in my experience; I've never seen another, and can't find a matching form online, the closest being coin banks, which this is not. It really strikes me as a memorial piece, possibly in the "graveside accouterment" category. Found in North Carolina, but it feels more like New England to me. (I found a few Wollases in the northeast online; also a name occurring in northeast England. Likely Americanized to Wallace along the way. I even found hints of an Erona Wollas, but the genealogy site is paywalled.) Too old and too finely turned to be a whimsical piece; if you know anything about it do share! If it is a memorial marker, it's worth many times the price. Free shipping lower 48 only; otherwise contact me.
