North Carolina Art Pottery Early Fine Low Vase Yellow Green Brown

A finely thrown piece of early North Carolina Art pottery, lead-glazed earthenware with brown manganese and green copper oxide decoration, in the form of a spice jar or low bowl, with delicate, ear- shaped handles. It strikes me as circa 1940s or so, given the rough clay (surely local), wear on the base, rim and handles, lack of signature, and variation upon a traditional form. The green and brown splashes feel more like Bethabera or even Southwest Virginia, which, along with the buff red clay and the handle style, makes me feel that the north-central Piedmont is the likely origin. A good 6 inches across from handle to handle, 3 tall, with very delicate and thin walls and ring turning, an 8th inch thick on the upper portion. One minor rim chip, age- and handling-related glaze rubbing in spots on the rim, handles and base, no cracks, excellent condition.
