Two Mark Hewitt North Carolina Art Pottery Vases Rose

Two very different Art pottery Vases by William Mark Hewitt, one of the premiere North Carolina potters of the late 20th century to the present. Both are wood-fired and made from the characteristic local (to Pittsboro, NC) clay Hewitt uses, but they have strikingly different glazes, one a matte pink grading into a lighter buff rose color, the other with a more characteristic alkaline glaze usually found on Hewitt's work. Both are marked on the base and have the usual stilt marks; the taller one is four inches, the shorter, fatter one is three and a quarter inches, and about the same across. Hewitt is the son and grandson of former directors of Spode, but became an art potter, eventually moving to North Carolina in the late 1970s, and has been an institution ever since.
