Duck Decoy c. 1900 Hand Carved Detailed Feathers Original Paint Signed

$249.95

A finely carved wooden decoy, retaining much of its paint, with glass eyes and exceptional carved feather details, signed "M C" on the base. Fourteen inches long by 6 high by 6 across. Completely original, with lead weight and ring tether in place (so obviously made as a working decoy, which explains the weathering of the paint). Appears to be late 19th to early 20th century. The carved feathers on the back of the head and the finely painted feathers on the back are especially nice details, and elevate this one to the level of folk art. Who carves feathers on the underside of a decoy duck's butt? This guy! (or gal!), whoever they were. An excellent early example, likely from the New England area (provenance is the Edgecombe-Coles Collection, Camden, Maine). Free shipping is lower 48 only; Alaska, Hawaii or overseas, please contact beforehand for a shipping quote, or be aware that the duck ain't flying anywhere until shipping costs are determined and paid.
