An excellent alkaline glazed Catawba Valley 2-gallon jug with melted glass and mottled green and brown coloration. Looks like a Ritchie curlicue 2, but it could be any one of several Lincoln or Catawba County area potters. Good sized at 14 inches, and in great overall shape, sans a chip to the rim and base. Nice strap handle with a thumbprint impression. Probably last quarter of the 19th century, with rough clay that has pebble inclusions. Also blows well if you're starting a jug band! Seriously though, a fine and absolutely prototypical example of early North Carolina alkaline glazed pottery.
