Original 1892 gouache by noted French Orientalist painter Paul Pascal, in original excellent 19th century frame. Never removed from the frame before, as evidenced by the corresponding marks from the wood on the back of the painting. Three small spots of wear from between the gaps in the back panels, but otherwise in incredibly good condition. It's been relined with acid-free paper and dusted off, but not professionally cleaned. Slight loss to the gesso on top inner right and other spots, especially but not too badly around delicate floral bits; otherwise fine. Pascal's specialty was desert scenes of this type, and the glowing sunset and Bedouin encampment are fine examples of his ouevre. Came to the US late in life only to die in poverty, like every artist, ever. From the estate of a prominent NC collector, who was likely 2nd owner, also, ever. A fine gouache painting by a noted and notable painter of African and Mediterranean landscape and genre scenes (who also painted Native American scenes late in his life, though I've yet to see one) whose works have been auctioned by Christie's and Sotheby's and are in numerous museums, in France and elsewhere.
