Great Black Folk Art painting, oil on artist board, an allegorical scene titled "Know How" (it must be a known story, as I've seen one similar rendition from the 19th century, with different poses and no title but same subject, and labeled as Florida school. The wisdom of age versus youth, in short). Signed J.P.R. '23; I've yet to put a name to the initials. In a great Eastlake or tramp art frame, not original but contemporaneous (if it's 1923) with "Arlington E. Epperson" carved on the base. (I found a couple of Arlington E. Eppersons born in the late 1880s from around New England, which would fit the time and style of the frame, c. 1920s.) I honestly can't tell if it's oil or heavy gouache or something else, but it's pristine. The back shows it was previously glued down, possibly in an album or portfolio, before being matted and framed, which would explain the condition. Painting is 10 inches square, and the frame 21 by 17. If this is 1923 it's a downright steal; if not it's a quality piece of folk art in a great frame, and worth every penny.
