Catawba Valley Crock c. 1880-1920 lidded storage jar, great alkaline glaze with Albany slip

$99.95

Lidded storage crock, Catawba Valley NC, alkaline and Albany slip, c. 1880s-1900. It has a nice acorn style finial and a lightly incised line around the shoulder, strap handle, no identifying marks but it's approximately one gallon. Eleven inches tall at the finial, and 24 inches circumference around the widest part of the shoulder. Probably used to store dry goods; it's been my sugar jar since I purchased it long ago, at an auction in North Wilkesboro at which two well-known Ballard stoneware jugs were sold. This is clearly Catawba Valley, with a nice honey colored glaze (some cinder still clinging to the base) and Albany slip. That combination, along with the form, would hint that it's possibly by the Hartsog/Hartsoe family, and it closely resembles a two-handled lidded storage jar by Daniel Hartsoe pictured in Two Centuries of Potters (figure 37, catalog entry 74, p. 30). Can't say definitively, though. There is (alas) one old chip to the rim, and at some point the lid had a fortuitous break, in that a sliver came out sideways and it didn't actually break; it fitted back in neatly (pictured). That one's my bad, and certainly cut the cost.
