A pair of Cherokee baskets, split oak and honeysuckle with natural dyes, one signed, c. 1980s-1990s. The Dale Smith basket makes the composition of both clear, naming the components, as well as the natural walnut dye. The 8-inch-tall (taller) basket looks newer and probably is, but I also suspect we're seeing the difference between leaving a basket in the sunlight and keeping one protected from the same; consequently, it looks as good as the day it was made. Neither is signed (one tagged from original sale), but they're clearly Cherokee, from the Qualla Boundary (Cherokee Nation) within the southern mountains of North Carolina. A striking pair of baskets when displayed together, and fine examples of Native American basket making.
