Stunning mid 1800s pine cupboard with early square nails, huge boards, gorgeous honey color, all handmade and in the tradition of rustic country furniture, it's built to be bombproof. Approaching 200 years, and should still be around a century and more from now. There are over 40 large, old, square-cut nails in the drawer alone, and about the same number holding down the top; likely a couple of pounds of nails alone in the piece. The top has a wonderful waviness to it that can only be imparted by time (and pressure and heat I guess), and the wear on the boards inside and out give it great character. Found in Northwest North Carolina; could be from East Tennessee or Southwest Virginia, but likely local. The rough-cut round saw marks on the back put it post-1850, but not by much I'd wager. Drawer pulls are period and original as far as I can tell (new screws though); top pulls are replacements. The locks have been removed, and the drawer slides underneath are replaced, as has the rail just above the drawer (I believe); the back has been reinforced too, with a great lattice pattern. The doors have been stabilized with boards and I can't swear that the panels aren't replacements, but their rustic handmade quality (like the barely-there bevels) make me think they're original. A keyhole-shaped hole was cut in the back at some point. It had some kind of heavy waxy dark-brown coat to the top, the only purpose of which I could discern was to hide the charming character of the wear; it's been removed and the whole piece finished in linseed oil (seemed appropriate for the period). Someone gave it a gentle tune-up, likely in the '70s judging from the door magnets. There are two older metal patches (one in the drawer, one in the back) where knotholes threatened to pop I guess? There was originally one shelf about halfway up, you can see where the nails were on the outside and the shadow on the inside; it's been fitted with several rows of shelf holders, so you can adjust to suit your needs. This is as pretty, and as solid, a piece of furniture as I've seen in a long time, and looks even better in the flesh!
