Two vintage North Carolina folk art carvings mounted on mountain laurel roots, by Swannanoa carver Phillip E. Brown (1955-2011; signed on bottom). Both are finely carved and painted in lifelike colors, down to the iridescent plumage on the male hummingbird, as is characteristic of Brown's work; each has inset glass eyes. Cardinal is six inches, root 10; hummingbirds (with unbroken bills!) are two inches long and 7 tall. The hummingbirds are dated 2005; cardinal could be 2007, or 2004? They look as good now as the day they were carved, and nice work by notable, late, NC mountain artisan.
